Recommended Door Care Instructions
Please follow these handling instructions in order to properly care for and protect your investment in your doors and to also maintain compliance with the warranty.
(a.) Before being finished, doors should be stored carefully indoors and not be exposed to environmental extremes of sunlight, humidity, heat, cold or dryness.
(b.) Protective or initial finish coats should be applied as quickly as possible after receipt of the shipment and after any working of, hanging of, or installation of the door.
(c.) Exterior use doors should be stored strictly lengthwise; on edge; without being leaned.
(d.) Interior use doors should be stored in a dry location and laid flat.
(e.) Care should be taken to handle doors only in a manner which keeps them clean.
(f.) Doors stored at a jobsite should have all six edges sealed as quickly as possible.
(g.) Doors should only be delivered to sites where the plaster is already dry.
(h.) Installation techniques, preparation methods and hardware placement must be suitable for each door.
(i.) Use three hinges for doors 7 feet (2.13 m) or less in height, and use four hinges for doors taller than 7 feet.
(j.) Using fine grit sandpaper, remove any surface marks caused by handling before finishing the door.
(k.) All six exposed surfaces of the door must be completely sealed, including areas mortised for hardware, with a minimum of three coats of high quality, UV retardant, exterior grade paint, varnish or other protective coating.
(l.) Products used to seal, protect, coat or stain should be oil based. Water-based paint should only be applied over an oil-based primer.
(m.) To help retard warping, doors exposed to direct sunlight should not have applied to them a stain, finish or paint which is exceptionally dark in color.
(n.) As environmental conditions will eventually degrade any exterior door finish, care should be taken to frequently inspect and refinish the door as necessary.
(o.) Precaution should be taken to prevent door surfaces from scraping across each other in order to prevent scratches, nicks, indentations, gouges, pits and other surface flaws and imperfections.
(p.) Prior to finishing, the door must be hand sanded.
(q.) Doors should have all surface areas; including all six sides, protected and sealed, immediately before or after hanging.
